The Sperm Whale is often depicted as a child of the Maori God of the Sea, Tangaroa. Imagery of Whales is often used in artwork devoted to this deity.
In the Kaikoura Canyon, the depth drops deep very quickly and is a preferred hunting ground for the bachelor males who frequent the area. The female and juvenile Sperm Whales inhabit much warmer waters elsewhere.
The Sperm Whales hunt for giant squid, large fish, and even sharks in the depths of the canyons using their sound as a weapon along with their massive teeth. The waxy oil around their melon can be hardened or softened using blood pumped around the head to influence buoyancy for their 45-55 minute long dives.
